Various reasons, I guess. One reason may be fear. In many
cases its about identity (and culture). If one starts questonize
a persons belief-system, one actually questionizes that
persons identity.. which may hurt. (e.g "I am muslim" or "I am
christian"). However, (as far as I have observed), many of
these persons dont realize that people with other religious
backgrounds has the same religious feelings about their belief-
system as themselves, it even seems impossible for them!
(e.g a relative of mine claims her christianity isn't "religion",
like other belief-systems, its "the truth", because her operation-
manual (Bible) says so. Its funny and sad at the same time.)
I have also observed around here (Norway) lately, a certain
paranoia towards Islam. People who never had anything to do
with religion, suddenly starts talking about "we, the christian
country".
Funny, heh ?
So, what they defend (in many cases) is their own identity.
(of course, this doesnt mean that one shouldnt respect people
for what they are)
