I'm also fascinated by the connection between so-called mental illness and
Kundalini awakening. It's fascinating that you became grounded through
surrendering the ego. I do think that is, in part the key.
There's a book by Dennis Gersten, called *Are you Getting Enlightened or
Losing your Mind? How to Master Everyday and Extraordinary Spiritual Experiences.*
He makes a distinction between the truly mental ill and those who are simply
going through the awakening process. It's been a long time since I have read
it, but part of the difference is the ability to go in and out of expanded
consciousness more or less at will. When one can't, perhaps medication is in
order--at least for a while until one can become grounded.
Certainly it would help if psychiatrists would ask whether someone meditates
before assigning a *bi polar* label. I suspect too many people are labeled
mentally ill and/or given antipsychotic medication for simple energy
manifestations of Kriyas, weeping, visions, voices, etc. Certainly had I sought medical
treatment after hearing voices, etc, I might well have been diagnosed with
one thing or another! :)
One thing is certain--many people going through spiritual transformation feel
they might be going mad. Gersten mentions that the 19th saint Paramahansa
Ramakrishna once asked some spiritual teachers if he was losing his mind. :)
I suspect many historical figures such as Joan or Arc, many if not most of
the saints, Rasputin, etc were undergoing a kundalini type awakening.
What somewhat confuses matters is the fact that K awakening can be triggered
not only by following Eastern practices, but also by the experiences of
trauma, causing the medical professions to attribute kundalini symptoms to mental
illness rather than an expansion of consciousness triggered by the trauma.
