Hi Sue,
The peace, serenity and joy that you seek can only be had when you understand your expectations and desires, when you discover yourself this is the piece of the missing puzzle as far as I am concerned. I lived all the things that you are experiencing, but my life is so different now, I tend to live my life more as what ‘is´ rather than what I expect it to be, and it is so comforting to not have that responsibility of wanting everything and everyone my way or expecting to view life as I want it to look. Yes, it is like a great burden has been taken off my shoulders and now I don´t want to control and manipulate anything or anyone any more because I know that I only ever attract what I need to ‘see´ and ‘understand´ and there is no-one doing anything to hurt me but me!
When you have discovered the whys and wherefores of all your longings, expectations, desires, etc., when you have discovered yourself, then you will release yourself from slavery to the ego and you will be totally freed. Self-discovery, or self-observation, is what I try to do every minute of my life, it is my active-meditation, and I have never needed to do anything else. When I started this work years ago, I discovered to my surprise and horror that I only saw myself as I wanted to be and not as I really was, and all my so-called enemies who were ‘kind´ enough to tell me how I was were actually telling me the truth in most cases. I refused to ‘see´ myself and therefore I felt hurt and felt them to be my enemies, to be wicked, to be wrong and hurtful. What we want in not necessarily what we ‘need´ in life, in fact to be quite honest, life gives you EVERYTHING you need - if you will only ‘see´, you will understand this to be correct and true. To self-observe, to ‘see´, and to
have courage to do so, breaks down all the beliefs and concepts of ourselves and of others, it is the gradual dying of the ego so to speak. The more you discover yourself, the more you will free yourself from the dictates of the ego, hence you will no longer react in life but ‘act´ as you ‘will´ it, and not as the ego wills it.
I have not read many teachings, in fact I know very little about teachings or techniques, my knowledge is superficial, so when I speak I speak from my own personal experience. In many ways I am glad that I was not given the opportunity to learn or be taught because as much as I read on all these forums, I find that there seems to be such a need and belief that one has to occupy oneself with this or that, as if to fill a space that is ‘empty´, and yet there is nothing to do, nothing to learn, there is just self-discovery, or ‘Know thyself´. As far as I am concerned, ‘Know thyself´ is the missing piece of the puzzle, in fact there is nothing else to be done but this, nothing at all. When you Know yourself, you Know everyone and everything, and all the suffering will cease. Suffering is a wake-up call, a message to look within to ‘see´ and ‘understand´ yourself and why you suffer, it is an opportunity to not suffer.
I have just recently bought a book entitled ‘The First and Last Freedom´ by J. Krishnamurti which will explain all that I cannot explain as well myself. I have recently been reading about Krishnamurti´s life and I find that my spiritual life has paralleled his in many ways. What he teaches is exactly what I have lived and discovered to be true. Perhaps there are other ways, but I can only speak about what I have lived and found to be true.
You are more than all the things that you believe yourself to be, you have a power within you to overcome all things, you ‘are´ all that you seek, but you seek it outside of yourself thinking that it is real and what you need.
Someone said on this forum in reply to your message that you should be selfless and give love without expecting any in return. This is an honourable attitude but how can you give something that you do not ‘know´, and how can you give of something that you are not perhaps really willing to give! Force was never a solution to any problem - ‘understanding´ of the self, and hence the other, is the only solution.
Depression is the other polarity of joy, where there is duality there cannot be ‘Knowledge´, ‘Understanding´, or Peace. The answer is the middle way, never the two extremes. To live the extremes, in duality, causes suffering; to live in the past and/or the future causes suffering; desire causes suffering; expectation causes suffering, etc. etc. etc. To overcome all these things, one has to self-observe the three bodies, the physical, emotional and mental bodies, at all times, to observe them impartially as if you were looking, listening, and feeling someone else but you, so that you ‘understand´ why you ‘think´ you need, desire, expect, etc. When you feel pain, you can be sure that it is the ego that you are feeling when you no longer respond to your ego, there is no pain.
My thoughts are with you, and I send you energy to give you the courage to ‘see´ yourself. Enjoy the adventure of self-discovery because there is more than bliss and wonder to be had on this journey.
Best wishes and much Love,
Grotty
