Hello Deesutra!
Going cold-turkey is definitely one way, and for some people it works, but
there's also a danger in doing it, your body may detoxify, and it may
detoxify -fast-, which may be not only uncomfortable, but a risk to your
health. So it's really important to listen to your body. Cutting down bit
by bit is probably less riskful, giving your system a chance to adjust to
the changes. =)
You can also approach it the "yogic" way, by cutting the root of the
addiction. Deep relaxation (yoga nidra) or meditation combined with sankalpa
(affirmations) can bring about a spontaneous release of the addiction. A
Sankalpa is a positive (never, ever negatice) affirmation about something
you want to change in your life. A short phrase that you repeat three times
in a deeply relaxed state, for example. "I am attaining complete health", or
"My body is getting into full balance".. Can be more spiritual too, like
"Kundalini is clearing all the blockages within me", "I am realizing my
fullest potential".. You can use Sankalpa for smaller things too, like a day
or weekly sankalpa. "I am improving my finances this week" The important
thing with a Sankalpa is that you chose one, and then stick to it until it's
become fullfilled. So, to quit drinking, a Sankalpa could be "My body is
returning its full balance", rather than "I will stop drinking" (Since that
can reinforce the whole idea of drinking in you) If you don't feel like
doing yoga nidra, you can do the sankalpa when you meditate. A good time to
do it is when you have relaxed your body and are preparing to start the
practice.. Repeat the sankalpa three times with all the conviction and
surrender you can, then continue the practice. When you are about to finish
the practice, before you go back out and start moving the body, opening the
eyes etc, repeat the sankalpa three times again, the same way.. =) I have
included links to yoga nidra recordings I've done myself at the end of this
mail, if you wanna try it. It's a very very good practice to improve
sleeping too, especially if you do it right before bedtime.
Surrender can probably also work with an addiction. Especially when you are
aware of that you have the addiction and don't want it any more. Feel the
addiction, and surrender it to Goddess.
If nothing else, all three methods above in combination could probably work
nicely too.
With love
