Sarah,
Welcome to the list. The phenomenon you describe is called a
kriya. Essentially, it's the consequence of the Kundalini redirecting
energy in your body and touching off a muscle contraction or other nervous
stimulation in the process.
Kriyas manifest when energy encounters a block (usually in the form of
mental, emotional, or physical tension). In routing around the block (or
potentially through it), the energy can sometimes cause symptoms such as
involuntary muscle contractions, sensations of heat or cold, and so on.
Unfortunately, in my experience there is no real "cure" for kriyas. They
are simply part of the experience. My solution is to surrender to the
energy doing what it needs to do, supplemented with regular yoga and
breathwork to help ease or remove blocked energy. Massage also seems to
help. This is an evolutionary process, so you may go through a number of
stages where kriyas appear, then seem to vanish. It is perfectly normal.
There is a wealth of information in the list archives on kriyas, and I
suggest you search there.
