Well, I can relate to what you describe. And you are right of course.
Always tests :)
 
But, (I'm in a speculative mood so excuse my rambling on)
 
On the other hand, and I am kind of just letting my thoughts spill here, (and maybe putting my foot in my mouth) it is possible to be in the awareness of witnessing some event and watching your ego respond to it, while staying in that awareness.
 
Its only when you get attached to what's happening and forget the Source of it that you fall back into the trappings. Its amusing, actually, watching the antics of it all. I don't think ego needs to be obliterated, but integrated into the awareness, and treated like a child that only can act according to its age. You treat it with respect while recognizing its limitations. When its integrated, it can be enjoyed because it's used as a tool, instead of stuffed into a closet as if its bad. To me, everything is an expression of the God. Including ego, intellect, and blue lights, while of themselves, they are nothing. So how can I not enjoy the pleasure of experiencing God in the form of a light, or ego, or intellect? How can a single part be excluded?
 
And how does one get anything done on the physical plane without an ego? I mean, while we're in the physical form, we all have one. Isn't it a matter of what its used for? While the ego itself is in the role of god, it causes great problems. But used as an expression of God, it can do great things.
