"Except where God really is?" Since God's hand is in these gloves up to the shoulder, this can only be a metaphor... for how the simplest things we already know are sometimes so hard to see.
The heart is what connects us to other people.
Other people can bring us down into the helpless flounderings we see all around us. But we were put in this world together to help ourselves find the way to what each of us really is. When we give other people the best of what's inside us, it may go unrecognized for years, until they've forgotten they ever met us. (People have done this for me.) Or, if we and they are ripe enough, we can help each other rise farther than we would in isolation.
