Since I've been hanging out with the Theosophists here awhile, I think I
should pass on Ms Blavatsky's take on this sort of thing. When she came
to the US, she was interested in Spiritualist activities and encouraging
them because they provided evidence that there was more going on in this
world than material cause-&-effect. At some point (later, I believe,
although her followers tend to say otherwise) she came to oppose seances
vehemently because she knew the "spirits" that people were interacting
with there were not the actual spirits of the dead people they claimed
to be, but more like empty forms left behind, forced into clumsy
imitations of the dead by an audience's hopes and expectations.
Are there spirits of dead people? I have no doubt there are; I believe
that some of them dropped in on my dreams to let me know they were all
right, and then went on their way. Are such spirits all tied up in the
affairs of our world?--almost certainly not. (If they wanted to kibitz
that badly, they might as well come play again!) Can our expectations
have powerful effects, beyond what we consciously know or control?--It
certainly looks that way!
