Thats common for older people to say, but I dont agree :)
Music has evolved, and if one want to find the good stuff, its
there. (usually not on the hit-lists)
One of my all-time favourite bands is King Crimson. They still play,
but they have certainly not frozen in time :) Many of the good old
bands tends to get stuck in the past, hence dies. (pops up now & then
for reunion)
There still beeing made good music, one has to look for it :)

Eminem, Britney etc is products, wrapped in an image, intended to
generate money. (though Eminem is far from the worst i've seen)
Still there is lots of people around today, with a huge gap they
need to fill. Unfortunately, TV seems to be the filling compund.
note that most of artists that is beeing grown, lives because there
is fertile conditions for it.. the reality "we" created.
