Dear dontcare,
You bring up a number of issues, here.
Yes, many drug/psychedelic states are similar to the effects of Kundalini
energy. Both can affect melatonin, seratonin and the pineal gland. Here is an
old article (1966) but I suspect most of the findings hold true today.
http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/96may/nitrous/lsd.htm
"As a result, Yale had a kind of head start in pineal research. Among the
first to pursue the trail of pineal hormones and neurohumors was Nicholas
Giarmin, a professor of pharmacology who had been a former student of Gaddum's at
Edinburgh and remembered the connection Gaddum had made five years previous
between LSD and serotonin. "
I personally think after one becomes K active, taking drugs is counter
productive. Some can handle it, but others can't.
Second, really awful problems with K are rare. Almost all of us have
experience symptoms, of one sort or another both physical and mental that could be
considered changes in the system. Most people would not call these symptoms
"damage," however. Most of the problems that the AD experienced seem to have
lessened over time, and I think that is the experience of most of us. Headaches,
stomach problems, changes in stamina, feeling disconnected, changes in
metabolism, etc. are commonplace, and usually limited in duration, although there
are exceptions.
I find it interesting that AD never really seemed to have faith that the
energy knew what it was doing--i.e. "However, two things worried me" "The other
worry... " "I finally decided that this was potentially dangerous because the
energy might enter the brain and cause some kind of brain injury."
I have felt the energy exploding in the brain from the very start, and have
experienced no ill effects. AD's problems seem to have been, in part, the
result of a self-fulfilling prophesy. :) Of course it's pretty natural to feel
worry when one is experiencing pain. There is also the issue of AD's being
"ambitious and a high achiever" Kundalini has a way of forcing us to slow down!
:))
Gopi Krishna felt similar "worries" and fears. Krishnamurti experienced pain
from the start. But at one point when asked why he didn't consult some
doctors, he is said to have responded, "It is not pain. It is an inexplicable
joy." (Leaves from a Diary by Leena Sarabhai)
There is also a question of the actual amount of energy we experience, as
well as where we experience "blocks." I suspect some people have more energy
than others, and this can cause pain until our system gets somewhat used to it.
Hope this eases your concerns somewhat!
Love, Hillary
