Subject: [K-list] Back from the dead and celebrating

I've been offlist for ages because -- I was getting my new book ready! It's
called TRASH, SEX, MAGIC, out June 1 2004 from Small Beer Press and
available in major bookstores near you. I'm thrilled!

It's about trailer-trash sex magicians living on the banks of the Fox River.
The big old tree across the road is really a god who used to be a man. He
mediates the vital energy in the area; the women interact with him and then
hussy his benediction all over town. But one day the town sells the land to
a developer who cuts down the tree. They have only a few days to get
someone to take his place before all that energy, thrashing around like a
loose firehose, destroys them.

The book's basic point about sex--well, in the book it's called sex but we
know it's all vitality of some kind or another--is that it's scary and
transcendent. For some it's too scary, so they add violence to their sex in
order to feel like they're getting it under control. For some the
transcendence is too confusing, so they add sentiment to their sex, i.e.,
they imagine that they're falling in love, because that makes more sense to
them than transcendence.

I have several characters who talk about this or experience the flash of
sexual lightning that hits them when they first have contact with the tree's
energy. A small child (age 9) accidentally falls into a magic hole in the
ground and becomes "charged". Her symptoms are explained in uneducated
terms--that she's been "'lectrified fulla all that stuff" and that "she
hasn't got all the connections hooked up inside yet to carry the current."
I =think= it's sort-of K-ish, but I haven't referred to K or to tried to
draw that conclusion.

But I am interested in the perspective of experts. Any comments?
