Dear Hillary,

Well, I try to obligee with some personal experiences with
kundalini/diaphragmatic breathing.

I suppose the first one with kundalini was while jogging and
synchronizing breathing with my strides. I did about 10 strides or more
per breath. Then out of curiosity, I tried focussing my breath on the
base of my spine or lower. The physical exertion probably put some
leverage on the technique of breath focussing. The result seemed to be a
very strong change in my state of consciousness. I posted here at the
time, but owing to pressure of work did not pursue the technique any
further.

With diaphragmatic breathing, I only made progress with the finger
between the lips method. One breathes in through the gap around the
finger so that the cheeks are pulled in a bit. The finger points into
the mouth. This usually seems to automatically activate the diaphragm
(and not the upper inspiratory muscles). With me there is a feeling
that something inside the abdomen is moving down toward or into a chakra
with an almost tingling, extremely pleasant sensation, which seems to
activate something like a chakra. I instruct Taekwun-Do students. Some
indicate by their posture and expression that they are taking an
enjoyable deep breath. The Korean head of the gym is very approving and
thinks it a legitimate shortcut to genuine oriental breathing. A
Chinese doctor (with a degree from a European university) has a similar
opinion.

I'm none too sure about mystical awareness. The technique is extremely
delectable and brings placidity. It clears morbid and impulsive
thoughts from my mind but unfortunately not enough to overcome my dread
of flying (so far!)

As for being academic and too theoretical, I do think that "academics"
have done a lot to introduce errors into "the science of breath"
(pranayama). There is a need for enlightenment and this has to be done
by expounding the correct theories.

Love, Richard.
