Greetings All,
The following is an excerpt from a lecture given in an English Literature course in 1983 (and many times since) by Dr. William Abbott of Sam Houston State University, Huntsville Texas and used with his permission. He was my first spiritual teacher, but never billed himself as such. He taught me how to think for myself.
Abbott: In our belief system, we have two ideas that things fall into, do we not?
(scribbles on board)
GOOD
EVIL
Students: (nodding in agreement)
Abbott: Somebody give me an example of something that is ALWAYS good.
Students: (murmuring) Money....Sex....Beer (laughter) (a pause)...Truth.
Abbott: Truth...does everyone agree with that? Is truth always good?
Students: (murmuring assent)
Abbott: Okay, so if Truth is Good...what is the opposite of truth?
Students: Lies (multiple assents)
Abbott: Okay so this what we have so far. (more scribbling)
GOOD--TRUTH
EVIL--LIES
Abbott: Is this correct? Does everyone agree?
Student: (murmuring assents)
Abbott: Don't you just hate it when someone lies to you? Man, it just burns me up! Who has ever lied to you anyway? Did your parents ever lie to you?
Students: (murmuring in the negative)
Abbott: (smiling) Oh yes, they did. They told you a story about Santa Claus, did they not? Why do we tell kids stories about Old Saint Nick anyway?
Students: (silence)
Abbott: Okay, let me change the question...Is it really "more blessed to give that to receive"?
Students: Yes
Abbott: Who first taught you that? Santa Claus did. When you were a child, you heard a story about a little guy in a red suit going around giving toys to children everywhere. And you found out what a wonderful thing is was to receive. Then when you grew up you found out Santa Claus wasn't real. Unless.....you became Santa Claus. Then when you saw the Joy and wonder in child's face on Christmas morning you learned it was truly more blessed to give than to receive....So Santa Claus, the guy in a litte red suit, flying around in a magic sleigh giving away toys...is he real or not? Is he truth or a lie?
Students: a Lie...but, but, no, no, he's fiction...
Abbott: So this is the equation we have so far:
GOOD--TRUTH
EVIL--LIES--SANTA CLAUS
Abbott: And if Santa Claus is a lie then truth must be what......?
Students: (silence)
Abbott: (Scibbles on board)
GOOD--TRUTH--NO SANTA CLAUS
EVIL--LIES--SANTA CLAUS
Abbott: Now Santa Claus, is he Good or Evil?
Students: Good
Abbott: So if Santa Claus is good, then by definition what must "no Santa Claus" be? (Scibbles without waiting for an answer)
GOOD--TRUTH--NO SANTA CLAUS--EVIL
EVIL--LIES--SANTA CLAUS--GOOD
Abbott: Does anyone see a problem with this equation?
