I think your tractor beam theory is pretty close. We attract energies that mirror our own thoughts. The person you have attracted is still acting under their own free will, but their energies mirror yours in some way, shape or form. They are responding to your thoughts and feelings in their own way, but the law of attraction makes each of your energies' "compliment" the other..like salt and pepper.

If you find yourself projecting, back up to the witness state and just observe the interaction taking place and have no attachments to the outcome. Does the other person make you feel good, bad, indifferent, prideful, lusting, exuberant, loving...etc? Let that be okay for the moment. Then when the interaction is finished examine what part of YOU makes you feel that same way and you will see the reflection. Respond to the interaction with this other person with Unconditional Love and you will see that what they are sending you is Unconditional Love. It's really pretty amazing...sometimes wonderful, sometimes scary...but always amazing. :^)
