[Bhavin Desai] The popular knowledge about Kundalini (and related areas)
is contained in the widely disseminated ancient/classical myths,
legends, music, dances, songs, culture, and scriptures. However,
knowing about Kundalini in technical terms and experiencing it in
practice are two very different things, as we all know and appreciate.
In the big cities of India, the ambience is similar to any big city in
the world, and there is not much *real* interest in Yoga, Kundalini,
etc, except perhaps for intellectual posing. The best source of
practical knowledge is in the villages of India.
[Bhavin Desai] I should clarify one very important point. In this
K-list, and Western knowledge in general, Kundalini is often discussed
exclusively without reference to related areas. The Indian knowledge is
inclusive and expansive. In particular, Kundalini is only a small part
of the larger body of Yoga (including
exercise/breathing/meditation/philosophy/etc/Etc/ETC). In Hatha Yoga
there are classically 84,00,000 asanas (try those spontaneously!) that
were "demonstrated by Shiva at the beginning of Time". There are
84,00,000 (84 hundred thousand) forms of yoga, ie one corresponding to
each of the 84,00,000 species of life. There is something suitable for
everyone!! Many subjects that you can imagine (and many that you can't)
are covered!!!
[Bhavin Desai] The main points at which most Western people become
interested in Kundalini is when either something has gone wrong (eg a
bad awakening) and they just want to *fix* it, or when something happens
that cannot be explained (eg Kundalini activity and the related
symptoms) and they are *curious* about it. Most are not interested in
the underlying theory/systems/methods/rationale/logic/philosophy/etc.
This is my general experience, although there are a few exceptions
(mostly but not necessarily all academic).

[Bhavin Desai] No. I have not followed the scientific research in this
area for many years, and hence my knowledge in this area is completely
out of date. Compare this with the ancient/classical knowledge which
does not get out of date! What I have found in the past is that
scientific research merely affirms/confirms/proves what has already been
written in the voluminous Yoga (which includes Kundalini) literature.
Some people are not willing to listen to (or read) the ancient grand
masters, but are quite willing to follow mundane scientists!!! That's
life, innit?
[Bhavin Desai] Another point is that the domain of scientists is fairly
narrow and specific (ie the physical world based on sense perception),
whereas the domain of Kundalini covers: "the waking state, dream state,
dreamless state, and beyond". To me personally, it is unnecessary to
focus too much on scientific research.

[Bhavin Desai] From one of my posts to this list on 11 April 2003:
** About two years ago, on explaining the Mudras and Kriyas to Swami Ji,
** his response was simply "Kundalini". I have followed Yoga for over
30
** years, with one full year living with Swami Ji, near Delhi, before
** starting my career. I had expected a bit more explanation so I
described
** further aspects like the "piano fingers (aka counting fingers)",
** expansive energy, trance states, shaking/trembling, etc.
** Again, his only response was "Kundalini".
[Bhavin Desai] As you can see from the above, I was initially asking
only about specific activities and symptoms, but Swami Ji confirmed that
the "big picture" was Kundalini. Although I knew about Kundalini, I did
not expect that I would start on the Great Path or the Royal Road in
this lifetime. Perhaps I have done a lot of development in my previous
lifetimes.
Or a less personal question ... what is the point of view of
> Swami
> Dev Murti Ji about Kundalini? ( Please answer only if you feel
> confortable.)
[Bhavin Desai] Kundalini is everything. Without it there is nothing.
The spinal chord exercises known as the Crocodile Exercises, designed by
Swami Dev Murti Ji are in fact Kundalini exercises to promote strong,
healthy, fit bodies (all five of the Pancha Kosha) and ensure *safe*
Kundalini development. The passage of Kundalini along the spinal chord
must be unhindered. This is achieved by purification of the energy
channels (nadis) via the Crocodile Exercises.
[Bhavin Desai] On a few occasions, while I was living with Swami Ji in
India from December 1986 to December 1987, he said (in various contexts)
"I am the final authority in the whole world". He has condensed all the
classical yoga and added his own definitive research. The result is a
Yoga system that is simple to practice, gives excellent results, and
(importantly for this list) helps with the *whole* Kundalini development
process. You would be surprised about Swami Ji, what he has done, who
he has taught, and so many other things. If you went to meet him then
you would never want to leave.

[Bhavin Desai] If your path is "absolutely intuitive" then why are you
asking about scientific research? It seems a bit inconsistent. In fact
there is "Sahaja Yoga" = "Spontaneous Union/Merging". You can find
several websites on Sahaja Yoga. Rather than scientific research, I
think the classic Yoga texts on Kundalini would be more useful to you.
And more useful than theory would be our Practical Yoga.
[Bhavin Desai] If someone is "naturally gifted", eg in maths, it does
not necessarily mean that a maths teacher or guide is not required.
Similarly, even though your path is "absolutely intuitive" it does not
mean that you would not benefit greatly from a systematic exposition of
Yoga and Kundalini.
