Although I am Hindu, not Muslim, I can provide a bit more background
regarding this aspect. In the early days of Islam there were many
battles and wars with neighbouring beliefs/groups/countries. The
unfortunate consequence of this fighting was that the number of men
decreased in relation to the number of women. Furthermore, in many
cases this resulted in many widows who were obviously vulnerable (in
many ways) without their husband. Therefore, it was decided that a man
could marry these widows in order to protect their honour. That is,
"sex" was not a primary issue in the original practice of multiple
wives.
However, it is likely that the above reasoning has been lost to most
people, and hence the idea of multiple wives has led to misunderstanding
(even within the Muslim people) and subsequent misuse.
