[The main problem in any large group discussion is the consistency of
terminology that is used and corresponding definitions.]
The Soul and Consciousness are clearly different and distinct concepts.
The following terms are all equivalent (with or without capitalisation):
Atman, Soul, Self, True Self, Real Self, Higher Self, The Self, ...
The Soul is not born, nor does it ever die. It does not come from
anywhere, nor can it be pointed to as anything in the objective world.
It is unborn, eternal, everlasting, and most ancient. It survives the
death of the five bodies/sheaths (Pancha Sharira/Kosha).
The Soul is smaller than the smallest and greater than the greatest.
The Soul cannot be destroyed by the five elements (earth, water, air,
fire, and ether). It abides in the heart of every living being. He who
is free from desire and whose senses and mind rest in undisturbed
serenity can see the majesty of the Soul and is no longer subject to
worry or grief.
Regarding consciousness there are various types: ordinary,
sub-conscious, super-conscious, supra-conscious, para-conscious, and so
on. These are different forms of awareness. There are also various
levels of consciousness (according to its depth and quality)
concentration, trance, contemplation, meditation, Samadhi, Nirvana, and
so on.
Clearly, the Soul and consciousness are different and distinct.
Bhavin.
