I've wanted to reply to this Rick since you first posted it both to sort out
some of my own thoughts and hopefully to get some feedback on those thoughts
from others. Unfortunately the question came at a time when my time was
fully committed so I'm sorry I have taken so long.
Ultimately I think that soul and consciousness are the same thing but, as
Mistress Angelique Serpent points out, the soul is a seed of full
consciousness. I have been thinking of it lately as a particle of
consciousness that is separated from the whole in a conceptual way. Just as
science observes light as both particles and waves I believe consciousness
can be observed in the same way. The soul is a drop of consciousness that
has forgotten it is also a part of the ocean, yet with the unconscious
memory of it's earlier unity. This creates longing and it is unconsciously
motivated to gather other particles around it in the form of family,
friends, social groups, institutions, racial affilitions but always there is
a sense of us and them - unity with a wave but the ocean that is carrying it
remains unconscious. The us being an expanded version of the soul or a
group of particles of consciousness that becomes a single particle at it's
own level of operation, aware of some of it's affiliations but blind to
others.
Personally, I believe that everything in existence has a soul from sub
atomic particles right through to the entire universe. A human soul would
consist of the coming together of the component parts of it's physical and
societal makeup. So my liver has a type of soul that is less complex than
my human soul. It's soul would incorporate the souls of it's atoms which
would contribute to the souls of the molecules which would contribute to the
souls of the cells that comprise the soul of the organ. In it's turn the
liver contributes it's awareness and multi level intelligence to my human
soul. On a social level my soul contributes it's consciousness to the soul
of my family which contributes consciousness to the soul of Australia,
world, universe and all the levels in between and beyond. Ultimately,
through this nesting process, all particles feed into one consciousness.
It has occured to me that the Kundalini is a symbol of the human particle, a
representation of the human soul. The idea that it is dormant usually
suggests to me unconsciousness of the relationships between it's parts and
the ensouling reality. As the thems keep bumping and pushing into the us we
experience suffering or love until the them's pentrates the us' or visa
versa and our identity expands. At some stage in the process we experience
an accumulation of stressors that breaks down the order of the conception of
ourselves and we don't know who we are. This is the opening
that allows the whole to penetrate us and wake up our own individual
Kundalini. The impact of this is that we are hurled back to the beginning
of awareness and need to restore some order to the chaos of all the parts.
As we slowly put the pieces back together again we begin to understand the
interrelatedness of all the parts in an experiential way. Our concept of
ourselves expands to the point where it includes all. We find our place in
the universe and understand for the first time that their really is no them.
For me, this is self realisation.
