Rick,
The choice of music depends on the individual. For me, electronic
trance/Goa music seems to work well. I can often go off into a
meditative state within a few minutes, sometimes a few seconds. Various
Mudras/Kriyas also occur automatically during the music, and stop very
abruptly when the music ends.
Some people may like to try Indian classical music, or any classical
music. Others may like modern music. Experiment for yourself. There
are claims about certain types of music for Kundalini, but having tried
them for myself I felt no difference at all.
Mantras are NOT a waste of time. They can generate a lot of energy. A
good teacher is essential. A very safe Mantra is "Ram" (pronounced
raam). Just sit alone in a quiet place and slowly repeat Ram aloud for
about 10 minutes, then mentally for about 10 minutes. Let the
vibrations permeate your physical body and then your mental body. Then
see how you feel.
There are more specialised mantras, depending on what results you want
to achieve.
