You cannot seek higher consciousness. That is like desiring to be free
of desire. It is still desire. Higher consciousness is a byproduct of
shedding the ego. To shed the ego you must be aware of what you are
hanging on to - what you desire.

You cannot separate change from awareness. Greater awareness is change
or it is not awareness but speculation. Focusing the mind brings about
stillness which heightens awareness. Mantras are one way but by no means
the only way.
