Jean Klein wrote about this. He said happiness is our default position, our deepest nature that we know when we are completely relaxed and at peace. We may come to this nature many times before we realize it is actually a transcendent state. Objects do not bring a "false" happiness. Rather, our desires are temporarily satisfied so our natural happiness is not obscured by them. Similarly, the ego gratification given by the temporary sense of self-importance also stops desire momentarily. Of course, if motivation is ego-generated, satisfaction never lasts very long.
I don't think clamping down on desire is the answer. If you know happiness is your true nature, you can observe desire calmly without gratifying it and it will wither away of its own accord -- "self-liberate" as the Tibetans say. More and more you will have the experience of happiness for no reason and you will be less dependent on situations and objects to please you. Holly
