Subject: [K-list] Synchronicity

Why do great spiritual truths and the teachings of great self-realized
masters always become perverted and distorted by the worldly ambitions of
lesser individuals? Starting with Paul, Christianity begins its decent into
becoming a dogmatic belief system. This culminates under the reign of the
emperor Constantine with the councils of Trent and Nicea. After Yogananda´s
death, various sects (Kiryandana, etc.) quickly diverge from the mother
church. New Age authors pander to eager and credulous individuals about
irrational concepts like 12-strand DNA, the increasing frequency of the
earth´s Schumann Resonance, increased solar activity, and our soon to come
evolution into angels. Yet hidden within this nonsense are subtle spiritual
truths like karma and synchronicity. But I am digressing from the main line
of this story before I even get started.

For over a year I´ve been looking for a job in my technical profession
without success. Despite over 25 years of experience, I have received few
callbacks and not a single face-to-face interview. Two years ago, just
posting my resume on the Internet would result in 100 inquiries per week and
salary bidding wars among potential employers, but now – nothing. During
this time I have harbored a gnawing doubt that I am going down the wrong
path, despite past successes. My needs are few, since my children have
become self-sufficient; so perhaps it is time for a paradigm shift, if you
will. Maybe it is time to stop lining the pockets of greedy corporate
executives and begin helping people directly.

Motivated by this altruistic ideal and sheer boredom, I decided to walk over
to the local Senior Center, which is only a block away, and ask if they were
looking for volunteers. Noticing the rickety-looking front doors, and
remembering that I had entered through the side doors to vote (this is also
the local polling place), I decided to choose the latter for entry. The
side entrance had modern level concrete steps, a large solid aluminum
railing, and shiny, new, sturdy aluminum door. How could this not be the
right choice? The door was open, and as soon I as I entered I cam face to
face with a middle-aged woman who asked if she could help me. I explained
to her that I was interested in becoming a volunteer and she offered to
direct me to the receptionist, who of course was directly behind the front
doors.

While waiting for the volunteer coordinator to come down from upstairs, I
engaged in a brief conversation with the middle-aged woman, not thinking
much of it – just a pleasant and cordial conversation. The subsequent
meeting with the volunteer coordinator went well. It turned out that they
had numerous opportunities for volunteer work, drivers to shuttle the
elderly to doctors appointments and such, van dispatchers, telephone “ok
checks’, etc. She asked about my background, and was pleased discover that
it was technical. They had received some donated computers, but many were
not in working order and they needed someone to fix them. Also, they wanted
to start a computer class for the elderly, but lacked an instructor – gee, I
just happen to have taught technical seminars at a community college. She
was racking her brain to list all the various activities they were planning,
and mentioned they wanted to start a singing group – gee, I just happen to
have been a choir director. The synchronicity was amazing.

The next day I received a call from the volunteer coordination asking me if
I could start Monday as a van dispatcher. She also said that the director,
that middle-aged woman that I just happened to run into when I entered
through the side door, would like to talk to me about an actual paying job.
Wow! After a year in the wasteland, suddenly I felt like I was in the
groove. Something had changed in a subtle but profound way.

Today, I was coming back from the pharmacy (got to have that insulin) and
although I am not a big drinker, I felt like stopping by the local pub for a
beer. After sipping on the beer for a while, and intermittently glancing at
the TV, the guy sitting next to me made a comment about the news story that
was showing. Rumsfeld´s plane had broken-down – big news. I guess it was a
slow day. I noticed that he had a brochure on motorcycles, so to continue
the conversation I asked if he owned a bike. He said that he had taken the
train into town from Cambridge because he was shopping for one. I mentioned
my limited experiences with owning a bike and asked if he had ever read the
book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’. He said that it was funny
that I should ask, because although he had never read it, he had been
thinking about the book for the last 24 hours, as well as the concept of
being in the moment. We talked about the book briefly, and I asked if,
being from Cambridge, he had ever been to the Cambridge Zen Center. Again
he said no, but that he was looking for a place like that. I filled him in
on some of the details about the center and he was off to catch his train
home. I finished my drink thinking about what a remarkable coincidence it
was to meet him – more synchronicity.

Anyway, I just thought I would share these experiences. So you may take
them as you will. Personally, I find the contrast between the bleak and
frustrating job search during the past year and events of the past three
days remarkable. I have always subscribed to the philosophy of following
ones heart, but figuring out how that ideal translates into a personal
direction, goals, and day-to-day activity can be difficult. However, it
seems that once you are on the right track, the whole world provides little
signs of confirmation.
