Lama Govinda wrote an entire book about that mantra, "Foundations of Tibetan
Mysticism". I highly recommend it. Many people prefer the translation AUM,
as it reflects the three-part nature of the word and life itself, birth,
sustaining life, and death, like the Hindu trinity.
