Angelique,
I agree that the Siddhis and Niddhis can all be used correctly for
service to humanity, and other valid purposes. When I was a teenager
and studying the ancient and modern Yoga Masters I had the Sattvic view
that if I could get such powers then I would only use them for the good
of others, and not for myself.
However, the ancient and modern Yoga Masters (and I mean the High
Masters, not just teachers like myself, even though Kundalini Active)
all declare categorically that one should not be tempted by the powers
and should reject them even if they are offered, so that one's real path
to Yoga/Union is not hindered.
Take even the "normal" world where individuals may get a little bit of
mundane power, status, etc, and this invariably leads to abuse, sooner
or later. It is said that "power corrupts" and "absolute power corrupts
absolutely". The risk is even greater in spiritual pursuits. There are
many stories where a Rishi/Guru has had to take away powers from a
Chela/student due to abuse.
I know that my teachers Jack and John were offered many temptations
during their 30+ years with Swami Dev Murti Ji. They consistently
rejected all such offers in order to stay on their path to Yoga/Union.
(These offers could also be regarded as tests in some cases.) It is
well known in Yoga and other systems that it is very difficult to
extricate oneself from entrapment into Maya, and it could take decades
or lifetimes to recover if one falls/fails in the path due to abuse of
powers.
Therefore, rather than being lazy and avoiding responsibility (neither
appropriate in their case anyway), it was more about staying on the path
and reducing risk.
