I had a feeling I didn't say that quite right, so let me rephrase it:
compulsive mental masturbation using symbols isn't healthy. :)

Not precisely. It's one thing to ponder over a cup of coffee and question
its meaning, and quite another to see immediately how it fits into the whole
-- drink!
>How does it affect how I behave? Why should I be kind to someone in
>traffic just because I had an experience of mind blowing bliss?
It's not as if you treat the blissful experience like a philosophical
proposition by Schopenhauer. The direct experience of the Self makes you
realize that this is the same Self in others. You just do it.
>And yes I know I am being deliberately obtuse. I am kinder as a result

Well, sure. This is like the story of the knight on the quest for the hold
grail. He gets the prize and then has to come back to mundane reality.
It's like the holy man who meditates in solitude in the mountains for 20
years, then comes into the city to share his knowledge, gets pushed by some
careless passer by and proceeeds to cuss him out. It's not enough to
experience transcendental reality, then go back into your regular existence.
It has to be integrated into your entire life -- wholeness again :)
Peace,
ken
