You're stuggling with a symbol. You've got it backwards. Language is
merely a reflection of how words are commonly used. You were dead on the
mark about having direct experiences of God (one's true nature, spirit,
Self, whatever you wish to call It). Mental masturbation over the meaning
of symbols and concepts serves no useful purpose. Experiencing the thing in
itself, the object as it relates to the whole is where it's at.
A Zen master once asked me, "You mind and this watch, are they the same or
different"? I picked up the watch and said, "It's 7:45". He smiled and
said, "excellent"!

Good point. You've had this wonderful experience, but how will you use it
-- in the here and now? My take is that the more one cultivates awareness
of this spirit, the more it reflects in how one acts and is perceived by
others. It becomes leadership and influence by example. After all, how
effective is telling people what to do in affecting their behavior? The
other day in heavy traffic I let someone pull in front of me from a side
street, he smiled and waved, and later on he let someone pull into traffic
in front of him.

It changes because you feel that tangible spirit more and more and it
affects how you behave, not because you adhere to some particular dogma,
perform these particular rituals, use these particular symbols, or believe
in these particular myths.
