That is an old debate, and a flawed one. On that basis, the list would
become a free for all, and a recent poll of list members showed that is not
wanted. List members voted in favour of keeping the list on track, and many
members also volunteered to help remind other members of the guidelines...
which pleases me greatly. :) :) (Thank you! You know who you are...)

People have always been concerned with bandwidth. It has been an
ongoing issue since the list's conception. It was the primary issue the
guidelines were created to address, in 1996.

The list is not run by php, and has been modified as much as the
current host will allow. Your attitude is what needs adjusting, not the list.

Yes. It was refused. By me, and you will not get an apology for it. The
list is not moderated, nor does it now automatically snip attachments.
Limiting the length of posts to 22 k is a way to prevent viruses, and has
already proven effective. Your post showed up on the admin page to be
moderated because it was too long. If your post had been 22 k of your own
writing, and on-topic, I would have allowed it through.

I think you need to examine your ego attachment to that idea.

What rights are you talking about? Rights? You sound like the troll.
Freedom of speech issues do not apply here, any more than it would apply to
spammers. Wasting bandwidth and posting off topic is not a 'right', it is a
selfish behavior that inconveniences the rest of the list members.
This is a privately owned forum. Posting to the list is not a right, it
is a privilege. If you abuse that privilege, it will be suspended.
In the past, I went to great lengths to *avoid* removing or moderating
members who did not respect the guidelines. However I have completely
changed my attitude about that, and am now very willing to moderate offenders.
I realized that placing people on moderated status, is a painless and
expedient method of protecting the majority of members, who *do* respect
the guidelines, from the hassle of receiving off topic or inappropriate
mail... including posts that contain html or styled text. Members who are
put on moderated status, are still free to post to the list, via the
moderators, so long as their posts respect the guidelines... which reflect
the preferences of the community.
PS to OMA: Thank you for your graceful apology.
PPS: to Lady Joyce.. Previously, in private mail, I made it abundantly
clear that posting such material is inappropriate. You have chosen to
completely disrespect my preferences and the stated preference of the
members, therefore you are now on moderated status.
