This is the problem with AOL and other network services (Compuserve is
another) that are not pure Internet Service Providers (ISP's). They don't
just give you a clear connection to the Internet, but essentially take over
your computer with their proprietary client software and network protocols,
then use a gateway to translate between their formats and the open standards
that make up the Internet. Most of us old timers don't care for AOL, mainly
because of this proprietary closed-system philosophy and the problems that
it creates.
All you need is a TCP/IP connection through a regular ISP. There are free
versions of all the client software you'll need (web browsers, e-mail, news
readers, etc.). www.download.com is a good archive for free and demo
versions of software.
However, good info Rich -- for people who are stuck with AOL or don't want
to bother with a D.I.Y. Internet setup.
