I best theory I've heard about the evolution of thinking goes as follows...
Animals developed certain calls to communicate with others of their kind, to
warn of danger, to attract a mate, etc. They reacted to their own calls, as
well as the calls of others. When an animal needed to produce a reaction in
itself, it made the appropriate type of call, but to conserve energy, rather
than vocalize the call, these calls became internalized. The calls became
more and more sophisticated as intelligence evolved, eventually turning into
language. Thus, thinking came into being, as the internalization of
language.

Interesting, but I, One Man Alone, don't think so. The old theory of "thought is language" is certainly convincing, but it's wrong. God gave us will, and thought is whatever we want. The thing that separates us from animals is NOT language and intelligence, it's personality. The souls we have are us, and we make our choices by what we want, not out of instinct. Our personality is forged from our experiences as we grow up. A child's personality is to have fun. A teenager's personality is to be bored and depressed, although I'm a more advanced 17 year old. Sex is actually the thing I think about the least, and I listen to more than just heavy metal. I also like reading. I judge things by quality and not who's in/on or involved with them. I don't drool and pick up my jaw when a "hot chick" walks by(I'm not gay, just not a retard.). Why am I so different from that of my "American Pie" / "Road Trip" / "MTV" / skateboarding / "Woah dude, check this stuff out!" / stereotype ridden comrades(not that I have any friends or even KNOW anyone outside of family)? Because it's in my personality. My soul, ME, I, don't generally like people and don't need human companionship to keep sane(though I'm sure I'm not). Further more, the personality of an elderly man is to be calm and collective. Wisdom changes us, intelligence teaches us, language helps us EXPRESS our thoughts, but at the top of the list, it's our SOULS, US, OUR WILL, that thinks.
Well, overall this has gone through more than just the thought/language theory, but I hope I've been helpful. One more thing, I'm always right about everything I say(this included), and sheer intelligence and reasonable thought is what says I'm right. Put 2 and 2 together. We have souls, our souls is our essence and us, thus our souls produce thoughts. Our brains are just for our body's sake. The brain is a remote control for our bodies. You know, the third eye(pineal gland in the center of our brains), also known as the "Seat Of The Soul", it's our work station. Simple. Just more unfriendly answers from the wise, the intelligent, the ever helpful but only gets the bronze in friendliness, One Man Alone.
