Cute trick, but not very hard to figure out.

Take the first two digit number, 10: 10 - 1 = 9. Next number increments
both the starting number and the answer by one: 11 - 2 = 9. In fact, all
the beginning two digit numbers (10 through 19) give the answer 9.

The next multiple of 10 is 20: 20 - 2 = 18. 21 - 3 = 18...

So you have:

10 thru 19 = 9
20 thru 29 = 18
30 thru 39 = 27
40 thru 49 = 36
50 thru 59 = 45
60 thru 69 = 54
70 thru 79 = 63
80 thru 89 = 72
90 thru 99 = 81

Just multiply the first digit by 3 to get the answer. Then notice that the
symbols on the chart for all those numbers ARE THE SAME.

This is the problem with miracles, ESP, magic, and the like -- they're
usually just tricks.
