My understanding of the skeptical mindset is not that all results are
"dishonest". Rather, given that a particular result can be achieved
dishonestly makes all such claims suspect.
For the skeptic, an extraordinary claim requires extraordinary proof. The
reason being because the claim flies in the face of a large body of
knowledge, gained slowly over many generations through the careful,
painstaking research of scientific methodology.
I respect that methodology. It has served us well. It has given us
medicines and technology that have advanced our physical progress. I
respect the skeptic's requirement for extraordinary proof. It is a logical
conclusion, based on a logical mindset, and asks no less from the claimant.
Where I differ from the usual skeptic is that I do not believe that Truth
can be found through logic, alone. Truth seems to require something the
rational materialistic mind cannot provide - receptivity. I'm not sure that
word exactly captures my meaning but I trust people on this list will
understand what I am trying to say.
