Yes it appears that early Christians, those who believed in the coming of
Christ as foretold in the old testament, started the base for modern
Christianity. Although modern Christianity compared to early Gnostic
Christianity is a whole different thing. The Gnostic influences and ancient
Christian rituals, are similar to older "paganistic" religions. Regarding
the Sabbath, as the day to rest, I think it can be seen as a symbol of life
cycles. Generally we speak of seven chakra's and the cabalistic numbering 7
is a holy number as are others. It stands for completeness.
In the end, gnosis (knowing) is always reflected and translated in
language, symbols, rhythms within a temporal cultural and historical
framework of a society, in which this gnosis is written. All gnosis is a
question of knowing, and therefore we fall into a cycle-reasoning, it is
true because it is true.
So to explain the gnosis (which is an ideal-type of the unreachable) we use
a perspective, and therefore symbols, which can never be absolute. If
symbols are something at all, then they are obsolete at the moment you
create them. Symbols(expression) should be in an eternal dynamic
interaction with your internal values, this flux (communication of
energies) is essential.
So the Sabbath, the seventh day) is about rituals, grounding and connecting
within your own internal and external holy dimension. It's fine tuning with
your higher (or lower:) ) -self, or call it with talking to God.
It appears to me that early Christians, whom also lived in exile in Egypt
around 500 B.C., got influenced by Egyptian religions, see the Christian
symbol Cross and Ankh (life) the "Egyptian" cross, and by other even older
religions. But as Christianity became the dominant religion in Europe after
500 AD, many older (amongst other European) religions were banned (druids,
shaman's, witches etc) and allot of knowledge has been lost. We may only
guess, as how the belief-system of older regions where, before the coming
of the Roman Catholic Church. They cleansed Europe then the wold, and
filled it with their idea. By withholding the truth, and abusing their
power and wealth, they conquered the soul of many.
