Hi Sky twin! ;) Good to see you delurking here! :)))
For me the hell/purgatory scenario seems more based on a seasonal/agricultural metaphor, while reincarnation feels more related to a more personal perception of "being."
For me the original base of all religions is centered on the metaphysical experiences of the religion's founder and his/her followers. Since those going through metaphysical "spiritual transformation" frequently experience the re-collection of "past lives," it would seem to follow that most "religions" in their original metaphysical form, long before they become co-opted, surely must have an implicit understanding of the conception of reincarnation or "being here before."
