Yes, it is surrender. I have heard of that in many forms... temples with a box for prayer requests under the idol or icon, pagans who have a wish-offering box on their altars, prayer circles that have a box for names of people seeking healing...
Thought-word-deed, putting it in a box is in a way, more powerful than thought alone. I have a decorative brass plant holder on my back deck that makes a good small size container for "burnt offerings". Write out my thoughts and emotions, burn them in the brass pot, give them to the fire, scatter the ashes. Be careful not to inhale the smoke!
