I thought a long time before posting my question. I did try on
the idea that what I have done in my life (contracted rheumatoid
arthritis, eaten a poor diet, etc.) also amounts to self
mutilation and a case could be made that I even did these things in order to
further my spiritual growth. But somehow it felt
different. Maybe the difference is you are doing it consciously
and a conscious infliction of pain sounds like punishment to
me. I don't believe in punishment anymore for myself, but if you
need it, go for it! I hope it brings you to where you want to be.
