I'm butting in unasked -- this is an important misconception.

Kundalini awakening does not necessarily lead to enlightenment, here defined
as the recognition of non-duality, unity, oneness with God, etc., although it
may. Many people achieve enlightened Self-realization without any symptoms
of Kundalini. There is some agreement that purification of the vehicle is
necessary for maintaining an ongoing non-dual view, as opposed to brief,
transitory glimpses of oneness. The opposite is also true, that glimpses of
non-duality have a way of stimulating purification.

Enlightenment relieves suffering, not pain -- big difference. Two modern
holy men, Sri Ramana Maharshi and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, both died painful
deaths from cancer. Enlightenment changes one's relationship to pain because
one is no longer felt to be an individual person to whom the pain is
happening. But as far as I know, pain is always possible as long as there is
a body around. Holly
