Specifically, after much abuse and torture, the POWs began to
identify and sympathize with their captors. One would expect just
the opposite. I think this also applies to many women who are
abused by their boyfriends and husbands.

So, where am I going with this? :) It seems to me that mainstream
Christians have become just like the Scribes and Pharisees that
Jesus "fought" against. They adhere to the letter of the law
(taking all of the bible as the literal word of God) rather than the
spirit of the law; they favor blind belief rather than direct
spiritual contact and self-realization; they regard any ideas
outside of their dogma as blasphemy; they maintain their belief out
of fear of hell rather than love of God, etc. etc.

How many thousands of Christian sects are there? Even a recent
great soul such as Yogananda has seen his teachings splinter into
many different groups. Apparently, this is the way of the world,
but the real truth is inside you, not "out there".
