Hillary,
Yes, I understand your point although in driving and swimming without a
teacher there is a far greater risk of crashing or drowning respectively.
For Kundalini development the ancient texts take great care to warn that
even a small mistake can reduce the physical body to ashes in an instant.
[There are many cases of "spontaneous combustion" that may have been
related to an unintentional and uncontrolled Kundalini release. Accidents
can happen, even with a teacher, but are obviously much more likely without
a teacher.]
When there is a suitable teacher available then clearly it is advisable to
have that teacher. However, when a (suitable) teacher is not available
then one must "make do" or be satisfied with email groups (especially this
one), internet websites, friends, books, etc.
However:
1. The key feature that makes the Kundalini experience different (relative
to other subjects such as driving or swimming) by several orders of
magnitude is that it is not as well known as, for example, driving and
swimming. Therefore it is difficult to determine in advance whether a
teacher (or other form of guidance) is required or not. The Kundalini
symptoms may be mis-diagnosed as medical problems (although the medication
will probably not make any difference, and may make things worse). Or in
some cases the Kundalini symptoms may have advanced to such an extent, in
an uncontrolled fashion, that subsequent controlled progress is a great
challenge even with a suitable teacher.
2. Another aspect that influences people is that the Sanskrit words
Kundalini, Chakras, Guru, Yoga, etc are all "foreign" words to many people,
and may be associated with religion, philosophy, etc. Therefore this
causes some psychological resistance because these areas may not be of any
interest to some people who just want practical relief from the symptoms.
At present, I have medium-level Kundalini symptoms. Having excellent
teachers and a life long practice of Yoga has contributed to a completely
safe (but not necessarily "easy") experience. If people find the various
Kundalini symptoms intensely "strange" then you can perhaps imagine, or at
least appreciate, how they would feel if those symptoms happened to them
without any intent or apparent cause!
There was a nice article recently about the Guru concept on the
kundalini_online group.
