No that isn't the case. Enlightend beings have egos, all of them, every last
one. They TRANSCEND the ego, they don't kill it. The idea of killing an ego
is some kind of "New Age" ....stuff... that has no basis in any ancient
system I'm aware of. Or any system (if you want to be extremely charitable
and call new age stuff a system) prior to the 20th century.
Since enlightenment is traditional and killing the ego was made up in the
20th century by God knows who the two don't mix well. Logically they don't
mix at all.
The fact is a competent teacher in the Eastern tradition will not consider
taking a student without a solid ego, because when one has a weak ego and
does work to transcend it those people become mentally unbalanced. They
must have a strong ego to deal with the Kundalini process, even at the final
part of the process, enlightenment.
This isn't just Vedanta or similar systems. You can look back to the group
that produced the collection of ideas that most modern Western esoterica
came from and new agers decended from, the Golden Dawn. Israel Regardie, the
man most responsible for the existing knowledge about the philosophy and
workings of that group strongly suggested the student under go psychotherapy
as he/she did their work. Not because they loose their egos but because in
the process of transcending it the person can become unstable if they
haven't done their work well, have weak egos, or have particular problems
that to the best of my knowledge that system doesn't screen for as well as
Vedanta teachers traditionally do. They never spoke of killing the Ego
either as far as my readings in that area have gone.
Of course the final proof is the eagerness of all people who have "lost
their ego" to brag at the drop of the hat about how egoless they are. If a
punk bragging about how many girls he's screwed is an act of ego, and it is
the act of a sick ego, then bragging about killing/loosing your ego is an
act of that same completely undead and very much unlost ego.
