Welcome Back,

In the Internal Martial Arts, the area of the second chakra is referred to as
the Tan Tien. It is exactly as you describe--a storage facility for the chi
(as in T'ai Chi). A person who has learned to properly energize and maintain
the energy in the Tan Tienn (supposedly) cannot be defeated in hand to hand
combat by someone who has not mastered the Tan Tien. The energy does not
equate to strength, in fact, T'ai Chi can be practiced using approximately
1/10th of a persons strength. Rather, the energy gives balance and
connection of all parts of the body to the Earth. It is rumored that some
T'ai Chi masters can strike with the entire mass of the Earth concentrated in
the tip of one finger.

I saw a demonstration of the power of the Tan Tien at our dojo once. I
master came from China and visited several schools around Austin. He sat
down on a bench and invited three students to volunteer. He had them stand
and place their hands on his belly. He did nothing but breathe. He took
three breaths and then smiled. When he took the fourth breath, all three
students were about 15 feet away on the floor. He just focused all his chi
into the Tan Tien and exploded it. His arms and legs never moved. The
students were two fully grown men (+/- 6 ft~200lbs) one of whom was the chief
instructor at our school, and woman (5'6"~120lbs). All were accomplished
students.

I never made the connection of Tan Tien and the second chakra until recently.
 What was I thinking? :^)
