I live in NYC, and work 3 blocks from the site of the former World Trade Center. Was just coming up from the subway when the first plane hit, and wasn't able to leave the area till after both towers crumbled, then I made my way uptown throught the desert-like ash with thousands of others who worked down there.

I am shocked and saddened by the way the whole site's been turned into a commodity-tourist site, souvenir stands everywhere, selling trite emotions. And all the scam collections for the victims of 9/11, not to mention the scam collections from the agencies doling out money. Or giving tons of money to rich victims families, and very little to the janitors and restaurant workers. It makes me ill.

I also wish that we could feel and much about every place and community on earth that gets bombed by "terrorists"--including the USA. What if we spent as much time thinking about every inch of earth that got bombed and struck down by hatred and terrorism, spent as much tv and media time as well as in our own thoughts--perhaps then we might really learn something about terrorism and war. We call them terrorists. But they are at war. Just as we're considered terrorists by people in Granada, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Chile, etc.

What have we learned this past year? How to sell more souvenirs, how to be more nationalistic and isolationist?
