Katie,
Thank you for your questions. Sometimes people feel as if no progress is
being made, and yet at other times there are jumps and leaps in their
progress. The Kundalini process does take a long time in general, usually
measured in years rather than by months or weeks. There are no absolute
guidelines because it depends on one's personal dedication and discipline,
and the preparations that are made to welcome The Goddess Kundalini. One's
progress depends on a combination of the teacher, the student, the Yoga (or
other) path chosen, and a suitable environment.
What I would strongly recommend is for you to personally find a suitable
Yoga (or other) teacher, and request what you would like to achieve. It is
not easy via email, internet, or books, although each of these is useful in
some ways for certain purposes. A teacher can guide you and correct
mistakes. Be careful to choose the right teacher, who should not be overly
interested in money, fame, favours, etc.
Some very effective and safe single word Mantras are "RAM", "PEACE", or
even any word (in any language) which you find inspiring and that suits
your particular aim. Then, sit alone initially (group mantra comes later)
in any comfortable position, even a chair is OK initially, and just repeat
your chosen single word mantra aloud for about 10 minutes. The back should
be straight and upright. This can be done morning, afternoon, and evening.
Later, after mastering the spoken version, you can progress to mentally
repeating it. A teacher will be able to give you additional mantras that
are suitable for you personally. Also the longer types of Mantra chanting
are very good in invoking a deep meditation state. Gayatri Mantra is a
very powerful classical Mantra. It was Gayatri Mantra, chanted for about
one hour, that gave me the initial experiences of Kundalini activity
including a spontaneous occurrence of Surya Mudra ("The Sun Seal/Symbol"),
which I subsequently saw in temple sculptures.
Be aware that a single technique used on it's own for a specific purpose is
usually not very effective. It is far better to properly integrate all
aspects of exercise, breath, and meditation into your daily life. The key
requirements are comfort and patience. Discomfort and impatience do not
produce desirable results.
(One word of caution. If you are a beginner then please don't start your
study/research at El Collie's site, except for general information, since
what is described there is very advanced. In particular, there is no
teaching at that site. Use your favourite search engine on the Internet to
look for sites related to Yoga, Kundalini, Mantra, Kriya, Meditation, etc.
There is a wide variety of information available, so everyone can find
something suitable for their own personality, purpose, and requirements.)
Good Luck.
Bhavin.
