Sounds like you're referring to type-2 diabetes, the most common
form of the condition. Type-2 diabetics produce insulin, but the
cells either ignore it or they don't produce enough insulin to
accomodate their mass. Indeed, a good diet, exercise, and watching
your weight are good ways to control or avoid type-2.

A type-1 diabetic doesn't produce any insulin, because the beta
cells that produce it (located in the pancreas) have been destroyed
by the immune system. While the cause is still unknown, the latest
theory is that there is a genetic predisposition for type-1, that is
triggered by a virus (such as the flu). After contracting the
virus, the immune system mistakes the beta cells as the virus and
attacks them. There was an article in Scientic American several
years ago about this.

For some reason, type-1 (also known as, childhood onset) usually
only occurs before the age of 42. I got it at 37. Lucky me.

Refer to the American Diabetes Association at
http://www.diabetes.org/main/homepage.jsp for more information about
the difference between type-1 and type-2 and about diabetes in
general.

> I've also worked with several nutrition experts, and none of them
recommend artificial sweetners such as those used in most diet
drinks. I've seen many diabetic people in my family use diet soft
drinks and candy thinking they're being healthy, when in my opinion
(and the opinions of my nutrition helpers), those drinks and candies
are not healthy. It's my belief, based on my years of reading and
research (and my mother's), that making diabetics believe avoiding
sugar in soda is their main concern in sodas is not the best
nutitional advice. And I have read many studies that conclude
aspartame is toxic.

The immediate concern for any diabetic is keeping their blood sugar
level down. Therefore, suggesting that avoiding sugar in soda (or
anywhere else) should not be their main concern, is simply bad
advice. Clearly, a good diet is helpful for everyone. Type-1's
need to balance insulin and carbohydrate intake. Most Type-2's
ultimately need to reduce their body mass so the insulin they
produce naturally can meet their needs.

Regarding aspertame being toxic, the "studies" I've read consist of
nothing but hearsay evidence. This contrasts with numerous
scientific studies that say it's perfectly safe for the vast
majority of people.

I can demonstrate the affects of a diet coke and a regular coke with
a blood sugar meter on myself in about ten minutes. Drink a diet
coke, no change in blood sugar level. Drink a regular coke, it'll
jump up about 200 points.

My dad lived in Missouri -- show me.

> Diet drinks are a conglomeration of chemicals that are not healthy
for anyone. Just putting in my own experience.

You're talking out of both sides of your mouth. You say you follow
the advice of nutrition experts who tell you not to consume diet
drinks, yet you have experience? If the experience to which you
refer is watching your relatives, what connection can you show
between diabetes and diet soda? It's more likely that they simply
consume too many carbohydrates and don't get enough exercise.

> If you don't agree, then don't. Drink away. But please don't tell
me about scaring diabetics. If some of the diabetics in my family
had been more scared, it would have been a great thing. They chose
the pills and insulin shots and diet drinks and diet candies. All
things allowed by their doctors.
>

You have yet to present any tangible evidence that diet substances
precipitated their condition. As I said, I entirely agree with what
you said about diet being a primary cause for type-2, but your leap
of faith that it has something to do with diet drinks and candies is
unfounded, and your suggestion that sugar intake should not be the
immediate concern for any diabetic is absurd.

Yours in truth and love,
