Subject: [K-list] K-Related Back Pain?
From: Brett Ram

Hello everyone! I have some questions I thought I’d bounce off the list. Any thoughts you might have would be greatly appreciated. Here’s the story.

On Tuesday, I was reading a book after my regular morning meditation. In the book, the author (who claimed full realization) was explaining how we can learn to heal the body but that a “higher state” is to live with a physical imperfection and “be not the body.” (He pointed out that many gurus have lived with frail bodies to teach detachment from physical form) In other words, he was saying that we should learn to dis-identify with or transcend physical form.

He went on to explain that he no longer would heal his “physical imperfections” but use them as a means to achieve this higher state. He tells of an example of where he was loading logs on a truck and slipped a disc in his back that caused excruciating pain. He was close to passing out from this intense pain when he thought to himself, “Be not the body!” And the pain from his still-slipped disc subsided to the point where it was a slight ache but it no longer bothered him. Then he continued loading the logs into the bed of the truck. Pretty amazing stuff!

Anyway, after I finished reading this story, I got up from my chair and WHAM! The muscle on the right side of my middle back knotted up into this really painful spasm. I screamed in pain and couldn’t move for a few minutes. This was totally new to me as I’ve never had any back problems in the past. To make a long story short, I wound up calling in sick to work and just rested. (I should point out that I had some “Chi Kung massage” done on my back a few days before and I was a bit sore from it the next day.)

The next day I woke up and my back was much better. A little stiff and sore but greatly improved. After meditating, I decided that I would not re-read the chapter of the book about this guy hurting his back. (I re-read each chapter of this book series a few times each week b4 moving on to the next chapter.)

This morning, I got up and my back felt even better and I thought that my back is well on its way to perfect health. Again, I meditated and decided to re-read the “back pain chapter” of this book again. A short while later, the same back muscle started to spasm again! As I type this it still feels pretty sore. Now to my questions.

Could this back spasm be “energy-” or “K-” related? Has anyone ever heard of back spasms as a K symptom? I’ve never had K symptoms that were painful although I know that it is very common. OR maybe this is somehow related to the Chinese Chi Kung massage? OR maybe I’ve just wrenched my back out of whack somehow?

Could this be happening as a self-induced lesson to learn to “be not the body?” I’m trying not to resist this experience but my curiosity is going thru the roof. Any thoughts anyone?

Pax et Lux,

Brett
