I've been lurking for a while.. but this is my first reply. Interesting reading.. I must say.
But Tom, I think there is a big (well sometimes its not so big) difference between coincidence and synchronicity. If you drive a green Volkswagen beetle... you'll be surprised how many of them you will notice.. that you might not have otherwise. Naturally your going to notice the monk (or whatever) on TV if that's what you've been thinking about. I've noticed a new vocabulary word (that I just learned) in the newspaper several times right after I learned of its existence.. I probably would have skimmed right over it otherwise.
Dr David Richo in his tapes Steps and Shifts.. gave the best example of synchronicity imo. He gives the example of a woman who saw a dress she liked.. ordered it in red. When it came it was black. She intended to return it but put it off several days.. until it was nagging at her to follow through. Then her mother died suddenly.. and she needed a black dress. That would be synchronicity.
I drove from work across town to do an errand one time.. then absentmindedly (habitually) drove home which was close by.. instead of back to work. When I walked in the door, I stood for a moment, wondering "What I'm doing here?" As I turned to go back to work.. the phone rang. (it was before cell phones .lol. ) They needed something important that I would have had to turn around and come back for if I had gone directly back to work as "planned".. That would be synchronicity.
I was on the phone talking with my mother last night and describing how I'm
going to do exercise bicycle aerobics according to the Tibetan example of
Lung Gom Pa runners, who ran from monastery to monastery in the Himalayas
conveying messages. They could run for 200 km in a trance. The television
was on and after the phone conversation I switched channels. The first
image I saw was a Tibetan monk - although I didn't know anything about it
until I actually saw it on the tc, what was on was the Ace Ventura Pet
Detective film that starts with him living in a Tibetan monastery. That's
how I often see synchronicities - the interlocking of a thought process
which is directly echoed by something meaningfully similar on the tv.
