What you describe seem to be classic out-of-body experiences. You describe precisely what I went through. I was able, through reading books, to initiate the vibratory state, hear the loud, high-pitched noises and leave my body. However, I encountered some strange "characters" along the way that made my experiences very, very scary and I too was unable to sleep on my back -- for more than two years!
From your description I doubt you experienced rising Kundalini energy, but you HAVE opened the door! My OBE's led me to an incredible level of understanding. If I was *consciously* able to walk around my bedroom (or what appeared to be my bedroom) and still retain my "mind" or my "self," well then, what happens when you die?...or rather the earthly body expires? The experiences convinced me there IS something else, there IS a God and there's a whole shitload of things we don't know now and will never know until we're not IN an earthly body. I figured I'd better find out -- and fast! ;-)
So I began to fervently question God. My spirituality entirely changed from what it had been pre-OBE. The more questions I ask, the more answers I get -- sometimes right out loud as if someone is standing next to me. After two years of "very strange happenings" and extreme events of synchronicity, I found the Kundalini-Gateway list fully knowing my K energy was "happening." Since joining this List and reading about other people's experiences, I have truly experienced spiritual awakening (notice I didn't say enlightenment!) and rising K energy. And it all started by reading Robert Peterson's book on how to experience OBE's! BTW, if I do experience OBE's I "leave" through my third eye. It's more comfortable than doing it Peterson's way, at least for me.
The one thing you'll really need to work on is the Fear Factor. You will be unable to enjoy any newly found abilities or experiences while you are in fear of something happening to you. You cannot die -- you are Eternal -- know that to the depths of your soul. Anything that appears to be fearful is coming from you, not AT you. Understand and take to heart the fact that YOU ARE LOVED beyond anything in this world. You're God's Holy Creation and if you're having the experiences, you are meant to have the experiences -- to understand that you ARE One with God.
The experiences of the loud noises and flying papers make it clear, to me at least, that you are still very much connected to the "quantum soup" as it were, and that you have the ability to continue an incredible journey in this lifetime. Don't stop now! Believe me, there's a wonderful reward for your searching.

After this sensation
persisted for a few minutes, there was the feeling of an explosion in
my forehead accompanied by a loud boom, release of pressure, and
audible screams. I then found myself suspended in empty, open grey-
white space.
I arose from this experience and have not tried meditation or other
similar methods since. Now, and ever since this experience, I cannot
fall asleep lying on my back, I must be laying on my side. (I never
had problems sleeping on my back before.)
I might also mention that in immediate proximity to my experience,
and what really stopped my investigation of astral projection, were
two main phenomena: loud noises and flying pieces of paper. The loud
noises resembled an aluminum chair being hit or dropped, and the
pieces of paper would just inexplicably flip or become airborne and
drift across the room.
