All therapies and healing require that the one being healed
participate.

Placebo Power is but a scant glimmer
of our real innate potential...

 Surgery for example, is a powerful ritualistic placebo
despite whether the procedure is valid or not...

 In the mid 1950s there was a new surgical procedure
 that was thought might provide symptomatic relief
 for people suffering from coronary heart disease.

 It was basically a tying off of the artery in the chest.

90% of those who went through the surgery
reported less chest pain.
(for 65-75% of those who reported less chest pain,
it was characterized as 'considerably' less pain)

 Many doctors doubted the procedure
 and did something that could not be done today...

 They did a randomized study where one group received
 the actual surgical procedure
 while the other group was a placebo surgical group
 where simply an incision was made
 and then the patient was sown up.

 The benefits of both groups were reported to be equal.

 The procedure was eventually ditched
 but not until over 10,000 ops had already been done!
