A young monk went on a long journery from the monastary where he had lived
for many years. He said farewell to his beloved teacher and all his friends
and set out for another monastary a few days distant. He studied and rested
there for a few days and then moved on to the next monastary a few more days
distant. He visited many monastaries over the next few months, studying with
each and learning the different doctrines. Eventually he made it back to his
home and greeted his friends and teacher. That evening he met with his
teacher and they talked for a long while about the teachings of the other
monastaries. The young monk said, "Master, each of the monastaries teaches a
different doctrine. One says 'empty the mind' another says 'fill the heart'.
One teaches that we must give up all we possess to know the divine, and
still another teaches that the world is abundantly rich and we free to
partake of that abundance as a gift of the divine. Who is right, Master?"
To which his teacher replied, "Young man, do mean to tell me that in spite of
all your travels you have yet to learn that the divine creator of the
universe knows what s/he's doing?"
