I believe that the next level up from the astral is the causal. This is the state of pure thought. Apparently, in the Sikh way of thinking -- and this could be in other beliefs as well, I don't know -- there is a ceremony conducted following the physical death of a loved one. I was told about this in relation to the death of a very young girl. They pray and chant for seventy-two hours continuously to take the soul through the four stages of "being" without the need of reincarnation back to the physical body. I don't know if this was because the little girl didn't have the chance here on this earth to actively seek God and the highest state of being, to "save time" or why this is done. Maybe someone on the List knows more about this practice.
