The old masculine<>feminine "thingy" (for want of a better word)
arose as a convention from the observation of the flow of water ..

Water rose from within the earth .. [ mother ]
and rained down from the sky .. [ father ]

and ..

The Sun shone down from the Sky
and Life grew from within the Earth ..

and, yes, its as simple (and as old) as that ..

[ and neither would exist without the other ]
